“In a hyper-connected world, solitude is a lost art. Having a physical respite from life’s chaos can be psychologically healthy. It gives us time to unhook from technology, unwind and reboot our lives. Some research suggests solitude can improve concentration and creativity, as well as help us realign our priorities.” ~ clinical psychologist Karen Nimmo
In today’s Sparkly Saturday post, we’re sharing ideas on how to create a personal sanctuary at home and on-the-go. Before we do, below is a description and some benefits of creating your own personal sanctuary:

1. A space to go within and to feel greater peace and stillness.
2. A space to surrender to your longing for comfort, peace, and solace.
3. A space that supports and reflects the heart of you—your inner self.
4. A space to retreat from the cares of the world.
5. A space to discover what is deeply desired.
6. A space of creative evolution to discover what you are and what you could be.
7. A space to heal, reflect, soothe, and restore your nature and senses.
8. A space of nurturing and therapy filled with things that you love the most.

While creating a personal sanctuary at home and on-the-go is completely up to the individual’s personal preferences, below are a few suggestions on how to create a personal sanctuary at home and on-the-go.
At Home

Designate a room or area in your home as your “personal sanctuary space,” ideally one near natural light (such as near a window) and away from technological devices.

Then, adorn and fill this space with things that you love the most that will engage your senses. This could include any one or more of the following: your favorite candle; pretty rocks/stones; flowers and/or plants; blankets; fluffy pillows; fairy lights; meditation pillow; essential oils; thunderstorm, rain, or ocean sounds; a comfortable chair; photos or art; healthy snacks; classical music; yoga mat; sparkling water; books; and journal.

In addition, incorporate nature to enhance your space with fresh flowers or plants; doing so will remind you that there is more to life that’s bigger than us. For best results, visit this space no less than once a day for five minutes.
On-the-Go

Create a “sanctuary box”—such as this plastic white marble one—by including as many of the following items as possible: a diary or journal—preferably physical rather than digital; a small blanket and pillow; essential oils; your favorite photos; pretty rocks/stones; ear buds and thunderstorm, rain, or ocean sounds or classical music; sparkling water; a book or magazine; and healthy snacks.

For best results, open and use your “sanctuary box” no less than once a day for five minutes while on-the-go or traveling away from home and, if possible, do so in nature, such as near the beach, a mountaintop, or grassy hill, or while looking out the window.
