"There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still." Franklin D. Roosevelt

For today's Wisdom Wednesday message, we're reflecting on a quote by FDR, which states: "There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still."

This quote lends itself to many different interpretations. While reflecting on this quote, a few thoughts come to mind. On the one hand, this quote emphasizes that there's always a way to move forward and grow, regardless of our excuses. If one method does not work, there's always another one. On the other hand, this quote emphasizes that there is only one way of standing still; in other words, inaction will keep us stagnant and where we're currently at.

While it's true that inaction keeps us where we're currently at, and that replacing our excuses with taking action moves us forward toward growth and fulfillment, it's equally important to recognize that action and stillness aren't mutually exclusive and, instead, there is beauty in both. There is a time and a place for moving forward and for stillness. In fact, being still can be very beneficial because it invites us to relax, reflect, and revitalize ourselves. Making time for stillness and tranquility on a daily basis prepares us for what's ahead and nurtures our ability to take action in the right direction.
